Delinquent Taxes
Delinquent Taxes
DELINQUENT TAXES P.A. 123 OF 1999 shortened the time frame for delinquent taxes. Taxes are due to your township/city treasurer by February 28 each year. If not paid by that time, they are turned over delinquent to the County Treasurer and at that point, delinquent fees are placed on the tax and the County Treasurer collects this tax. For the first year of delinquency, there is a 4% base fee and 1%/month. Therefore, payment in March would be 5% of the base tax as turned over by the Township/City. After the 1st year, the parcel enters a period of “forfeiture”. Fees of $175.00 and $20.00 are placed on the parcel in March of the second year and as the year progresses, more fees are added for personal service, publication and certified mailing. During that second year, the interest per month goes up to 1.5% back to the date of original delinquency. |
